During the First Barbary War, the United States was engaged in a conflict with the Barbary States of North Africa, including Tripoli, over the practice of piracy and the payment of tribute to protect American merchant ships from attacks. The USS Enterprise, under the command of Lieutenant Andrew Sterett, was one of the ships involved in combating the pirates and securing American interests in the region.
On August 1, 1801, while cruising off the coast of what is now Libya, the USS Enterprise encountered a Tripolitan polacca (a type of sailing vessel) named “Tripoli.” The Tripolitan vessel was heavily armed and manned by a sizable crew of experienced corsairs.
The Tripolitans, underestimating the American ship’s capabilities, decided to attack the USS Enterprise, likely hoping to capture it as a prize and take its crew as prisoners.
As the Tripolitan polacca closed in on the USS Enterprise, Lieutenant Sterett and his crew skillfully maneuvered their ship into a favorable position to engage the enemy. The battle began with a barrage of cannon fire from both vessels, each trying to inflict maximum damage on the other.
Despite being outnumbered and facing a larger and more heavily armed opponent, the crew of the USS Enterprise displayed remarkable marksmanship and determination. The Americans’ accurate gunnery inflicted significant damage to the Tripolitan vessel, taking out its rigging, disabling cannons, and causing casualties among its crew.
In contrast, the USS Enterprise suffered minimal damage due to its effective evasive actions and disciplined crew. The superiority of American seamanship and firepower quickly became apparent, tipping the scales in favor of the USS Enterprise.
As the battle continued, the Tripolitan polacca found itself in a precarious situation, with its chances of victory dwindling rapidly. Unable to overcome the relentless assault from the USS Enterprise, the Tripolitans eventually surrendered.

Lieutenant Sterett and his crew captured the Tripolitan polacca “Tripoli” and its crew, achieving a decisive victory for the United States. This successful engagement boosted the morale of the American forces and demonstrated the effectiveness of the young U.S. Navy in combating Barbary piracy.
The capture of the “Tripoli” on August 1, 1801, was a significant milestone in the First Barbary War and solidified the reputation of the USS Enterprise and its crew as formidable defenders of American interests at sea.
