The F-1 Started out as the Carp (SS-20)

The submarine torpedo boat Carp (SS-20), the latest and most efficient type of underwater fighter, was launched on September 6, 1911 at the Union Iron Works. Miss Josephine Tynan, little daughter of Joseph. J. Tynan, general manager of the Iron Works, christened the fish-like craft, and the launching was accomplished on time and without a hitch. On the launching platform were officers of the army and navy, members of the national legislature, representatives of foreign governments – and ” men and women prominent in society. Before the launching, W. R. Sands, representing the Electric – Boat Company, pinned a dainty gold watch on little’ Miss Tynan’s breast, and President McGregor of the Union Iron Works “decorated the girl with a jeweled locket.

  1. My grandfather was one of the five survivors. He helped one of the other survivors get back to Salt Lake City after they were dismissed from duty due to the severity of their injuries from this incident.

    There was a moment where three of the crew were trying to exit the sub and realized one had to stay behind to ensure the other two could get out. My grandfather named his first son Jack after that man.

    The sailor who returned to Salt Lake married and his wife died giving birth to twin boys. He was last seen running from the hospital. When my grandfather heard what happened and the twins had been sent to an orphanage, he went to adopt them. Sadly, one had been adopted, so my grandfather adopted the remaining twin and named him Jim after his biological father.
