Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires

Smokey Bear was created to raise awareness about wildfire prevention and educate the public about the importance of protecting forests. In 1944, a black bear cub was found clinging to a tree after a wildfire swept through the Lincoln National Forest in New Mexico. The cub was rescued and became a living symbol of the need for wildfire prevention and resource conservation. Inspired by this event, the U.S. Forest Service, in collaboration with the Ad Council and the National Association of State Foresters, launched the Smokey Bear campaign.

The iconic catchphrase “Remember… Only YOU Can Prevent Forest Fires” was coined in 1947 and has since become synonymous with Smokey Bear. The campaign featured posters, educational materials, and advertisements that emphasized personal responsibility in preventing wildfires.

In 2001, due to a better understanding of forest ecology, the message was updated to “Only YOU Can Prevent Wildfires,” to encompass the broader range of human-caused wildfires, including those in grasslands and other natural areas.

Smokey Bear’s impact on public awareness and attitudes towards wildfire prevention has been substantial. The campaign contributed to a significant reduction in the number of human-caused wildfires and played a role in shaping public attitudes about responsible outdoor behavior.
