Before World War I, the U.S. military was 140,000 strong; by the end of the war, the military’s ranks swelled to 2 million. Seventy percent of the ranks were new draftees: One of them was Samuel Marcus. He left behind his family and girlfriend, Ann, and was totally unprepared for what he found when he arrived in France.
