100 years ago, there were two wars to worry about: One in France and one looming against the flu – Military history – Stripes

Estimates say about 500 million people, or one-third of the world’s population, became infected with the flu virus and the number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide. By comparison, total number of military and civilian casualties in World War I was around 40 million, 20 million deaths and 21 million wounded.
